Despite their relatively small size, the Maltese Islands boast no less than three listed World Heritage sites including the City of Valetta which was built by the Knights, the Megalithic Temples that include the oldest known freestanding man-made structure in the world, and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum underground network hewn from rock, dating back to 3600 BC and widely acknowledged as one of the most important prehistoric monuments in the world.
